미완의 삶을 지켜보는 자

임승천은 자신이 직접 지어낸 허구의 이야기를 기반으로 구상 조각과 설치 작업을 선보여 왔다. '뱃머리가 세 개인 배', '등에 혹이 달리고 눈이 세 개인 주인공'과 같이 판타지적 요소가 가미된 작가의 세계는 디스토피아에 가까운 어둡고 기괴한 환경으로 묘사되었다. 생존을 위해 치열하게 움직이는 등장인물들의 형상을 따라가다 보면 이 가상의 세계가 우리를 비추고 있음을 자연스레 알아차릴 수 있다. 대담한 스케일로 10년 넘게 이어져 온 장편 서사는 작가의 지난한 삶을 발판 삼아 혼탁한 시대상을 넘나든다.  

픽션의 힘을 빌려 현실과 일정한 거리를 두고 병든 사회를 비판하던 작가의 태도는 코로나19 팬데믹을 기점으로 일정 부분 변모한다. 모두가 세상과 단절했던 지난 2년 동안 임승천은 우리 사회의 생경한 민낯을 낱낱이 마주했다. 소설보다 더 극적인 현실의 사건들과 무분별하게 보도되는 가짜 뉴스들로 스스로를 고립시킬 수밖에 없었던 순간들. 평범한 일상에서 돌연히 느낀 막연한 불안과 공포는 작가를 현실 세계에 몰입하게 했으며 허구의 것으로는 더 이상 충족될 수 없는 오늘의 이야기를 끌어내는 데 일조한다.  

새로운 이야기는 집으로부터 나온다. 자택에 고립되었던 기억은 <In House>에서 신체화된 주택의 형상으로 가공된다. 눈, 코, 귀에 팔다리까지 달린 두 개의 집은 폐쇄적이었던 당시의 상황과 불안의 무게를 시각화한 것이다. 이 둘은 같은 모양에 비슷한 질감을 가진 것처럼 보이지만 하나는 시멘트가 혼합된 묵직한 그라우트고 다른 하나는 가벼운 합성수지다. 외피에 숨겨진 가벼운 생각들이 극단적으로 오고 가는 동시에 묵직하게 갇혀 해소되지 못했음을 짐작해 볼 수 있다. 자전적인 성격이 돋보이는 조각들은 옴짝달싹할 수 없었던 작가의 정신적, 육체적 피로감을 생생하게 전한다. 

집 안에 침잠한 그는 다시금 바깥세상을 관조한다. 이 과정에서 창작한 형상들은 욕망이 아우성치는 현실과 그 안에서 살아가는 인간에 대한 일지(日誌)와도 같다. 예컨대 두상들을 병치한 <고리Ⅰ>은 희로애락의 정점을 세밀하게 기록한다. 여기서 감정은 어떤 현상에 대한 내면의 반응이다. 작가가 인간의 본질을 연구하기 위해 줄곧 사용해왔던 주요한 소재이기도 하며 외부의 자극으로 쉽사리 치닫는 인간의 가장 연약한 부분을 시사한다. 감정이 맞물린 틈새를 비집고 교차하는 붉은 실은 하염없이 고조되는 양가감정을 아슬아슬하게 이어준다.  

개인의 감정은 집단을 움직이는 힘을 가지기도 한다. <고리Ⅱ>에서 평평하게 쪼개진 수십 개의 얼굴 조각은 도미노 패처럼 일렬로 나열해 있다. 원을 그리며 층층이 쌓인 군상들은 개개인의 주관이 모여 공통점을 가지는 상호주관적인 관계 속에서 공동체의 욕망과 권력의 허무함을 꼬집는다. 작가는 누군가 확증편향의 안온함에 기대는 순간 모두 한 방향으로 무너져내릴 수 있는 집단화의 위험성 또한 주지시킨다. 같은 맥락으로 어느 여성 국가대표 양궁선수의 페미니즘 이슈를 다룬 <표적이 된 여인>은 실화(實話)가 주는 힘을 이용하여 편향적인 집단의식과 매체를 경계한다.

이번 전시의 정점은 보이지 않는 힘들이 실제 동력을 부여받는 지점에 있다. <Balance>는 두 주체가 힘을 겨루는 키네틱 작품이다. 모터에 의해 앞뒤로 천천히 구동하는 주먹에는 붉은 실이 쥐어졌다. 두 주먹을 연결하는 실은 어느 순간 늘어졌다 다시 팽팽하게 당겨지기를 반복한다. 개인, 사회, 국가로 표상되는 이들의 욕망을 조율하는 것은 어려운 일이리라. 그렇게 바닥에 널브러진 붉은 실에서 균형에 다다르지 못한 욕망의 흔적을 목도할 수 있다. 무채색의 공간에서 드문드문 인식되는 이 붉은 색은 작가가 관람객이 가진 사유의 영역을 열고자 만든 장치로 곳곳에 있다. 주로 가는 실로 표현되지만 <붉은 발>에서는 신체 일부에 입혀 누구나 피해자이며 또 가해자가 될 수 있지 않냐는 강렬한 질문을 던지고 있다. 

늘 그러했듯 임승천의 작품은 무대에서 연기하는 배우처럼 자리를 지킨다. 다만 긴밀한 스토리 라인을 중시했던 이전과 달리 현상 또는 사건 자체에 초점을 맞춘다. 현실을 나열하고 있는 이들에게서는 어떤 기승전결의 구조나 흐름을 발견할 수 없다. 개연성 없이 흩어진 이야기들을 통해 해소되기 어려운 빈 공백은 바로 우리 사회가 ‘잃어버린 고리(missing Link)’이다. 주로 생물의 진화 단계를 설명하기 위해 사용되고 해결되지 않은 미제 사건을 뜻하기도 하는 이 용어는 전체를 완성하기 위해 반드시 필요하지만 찾을 수 없는 구간을 의미한다. 언제나 미완성으로 마무리될 수밖에 없는 인간의 삶에서 결코 찾아볼 수 없는 균형과 같이 말이다. 

이제서야 현실에 다다른 임승천은 세상을 향한 상념을 주저 없이 내보이고 있다. 비록 그 속에 우울감과 회의감이 공존하는 순간이 있다 하더라도 예술가적 태도로 사유하여 밝히기를 멈추지 않는다. 함의가 직관적으로 드러나는 사실주의에 적을 두고 사회 현상을 다루면서도 억지로 교훈적인 미래를 제시하지도 않는다. 미완의 삶 속에서 ‘잃어버린 고리(missing Link)’를 발견할 것이라는 막연한 기대와 희망도 없이 그저 지켜볼 뿐이다. 덤덤한 태도로 현실의 틀을 만들고 현상을 찍어내 색을 입히는 작가의 수행적인 태도가 오히려 현대인의 무력감을 강하게 자극한다. 그렇게 우리는 관조자의 시선을 통해 다시 나 자신의 이야기를 만난다.

An Observer of Incomplete Lives

Lim Seung-chun has been presenting conceptual sculptures and installations based on self-made fictional stories. His oeuvre is replete with fantastical elements – “a ship with three prows” and “a main character with a hump on the back and three eyes” etc. - is depicted as a dark and bizarre scene that borders on dystopia. As we trace the images of the characters struggling to survive in his works, we can easily fathom that this fictional world mirrors our own. The epic narrative, which spans more than a decade on a bold scale, touches upon the murky trends of time based on his past life. 

His attitude of criticizing the ailing society by somewhat detaching from the reality and resorting to the nature of f iction has partly changed with the onset the COVID-19 pandemic. During the past two years when everyone was cut off from the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lim came across each and every hidden or unknown part of the society. Real-life events that are more dramatic than novels’ and indiscriminately covered fake news forced him to isolate himself. The vague anxiety and fear that he suddenly felt in everyday life immersed him in the real world and helped him draw out the stories of today that can no longer be fulfilled by fiction. 

His new story comes out of his house. His memories of isolation at  home are processed into the form of a house that has turned into a human body in In House. Two houses with eyes, a nose, ears, and even limbs visualize the then closed social atmosphere and the weight of anxiety. They appear to have the same shape and similar textures, but one is a heavy grout mixed with cement and the other is a light synthetic resin. It is fathomable that casual thoughts hidden behind the outer surface are dramatically moving back and forth, while being densely trapped, thus failing to be untapped or resolved. The autobiographical nature of the sculptures vividly conveys Lim’s mental and physical fatigue of having to be isolated at home. Having being sunk deeply in the house, he contemplates the outside world once again. The images he creates in this process are like a diary of the reality with outcries for desire and the human beings who live in it. For example, Link I, which juxtaposes two images of heads, records the peak of emotional ups and downs in detail. Here, emotion is an inner response to a phenomenon. 

It is also the main material he has always used to study the nature of human beings and manifests the most fragile part of human beings easily triggered by external stimuli. The red threads that cross through the gap of the emotional interlocking is a tenuous link between the ambivalent feelings that are endlessly intensifying. Personal emotions sometimes have the power to directly impact an entire group in many ways. In Link II, dozens of flattened and fragmented faces are arranged in a row like a hand of dominoes. The circling, layered figures point out the desire of a community and the futility of power in a mutually subjective relationship where individual subjects come together and have something in common. Lim also draws attention to the dangers of collectivization, which can all collapse in one direction the moment someone leans into the comfort of confirmation bias. In the same context, A Woman Becoming the Target, which deals with feminism in a female archer in the national team, leverages the persuasiveness of a true story to warn against biased collective consciousness and media. 

This exhibition has its zenith in the point where invisible forces are given real power. Balance is a kinetic work in which two subjects compete for strength. A red thread is held in a fist that is slowly driven back and forth by a motor. The thread connecting the two fists is stretched at one point and then pulled tightly again. It would be difficult to reconcile the desires of individuals, a society, and a nation. The red thread on the floor shows the traces of desires that have failed to strike a balance. This red color, which is sparsely perceived in an otherwise colorless space, is a setup Lim created to open up the audience’s realm of thought. Although it is usually represented by a thin thread, Red Foot poses a poignant question, “Isn’t it true that anyone can be a victim or a perpetrator?” 

As always, Lim’s works retain their spot on a stage like stage actors. However, unlike his previous works that emphasized a tight story line, they focus on a phenomenon or event itself. There is no structure or flow of a smooth logic in the works of those that simply show bits of reality. Empty spaces that are difficult to fill through illogically scattered stories are “missing link” in the society. Often used to describe stages in the evolution of living species and also to refer to unsolved cases, the term “missing link” refers to a missing piece that is essential to the completion of a whole. It is like the balance in human life that can never be found, which always ends up being incomplete. 

Having come to terms with reality at last, Lim does not hesitate to share his thoughts about the world. Even if there are coexisting moments of depression and skepticism in his works, his artistic contemplation and manifestation of outcome never stop. He deals with social phenomena with a realism that reveals implications intuitively, but does not forcefully present a didactic future. He simply observes what is going on without vague expectations and hopes of discovering the “missing link” in incomplete lives. His performative attitude, which creates a frame of reality with a placid attitude and adds color tones it by molding phenomena, strongly stimulates the helplessness of modern people. As such, we end up encountering our own stories through the gaze of the observer.
